There are many preliminary issues that are best dealt with before you find yourself being pressurised to sign a piece of paper comitting you to the deal. A lawyer will also be able to reommend how to finance the deal, find a good surveyor and possibly even translate the report.

Check there are no outstanding mortagages on the property, all taxes have been paid and all renovations have been licenced.

Obtain a tax code (codice fiscale). You will need it in order to to sign the deed of sale.

Expect the proces to be remotely like buying a house in the UK although there may be superificial similarities

Forget to agree with your surveyor the things you would like surveyed. Your input is critical

Leave without a receipt for the deposit.

Pay in cash for your property purchase. Italian police will list you in a file of supsicious people!
